Every business exists within a community. Every community is different and unique. And every large city has a bunch of hidden or lesser-known resources and interesting hotspots that not everyone knows about.
As a locally owned and operated business, CABS has done business in the Sacramento area since its founding. Our employees and customers live right here in California, and have often lived here their entire lives.
We love the Sacramento area, and in working throughout the city, we’re always surprised at the many interesting events, locations, and resources available to residents. Below we’ve detailed several that the city itself supports and promotes that may be of interest to you, your family or loved ones.
Public Community Centers
No less than 18 different community centers exist in Sacramento! These each have their own schedule of events that includes outdoor activities, dog parks, indoor meeting facilities, classes and workshops on a variety of interesting subjects.
A selection of examples from these centers includes writing classes, children’s workshops and camps, horticulture and floral arrangement workshops, musical events, playgrounds, meditation workshops, fitness classes, martial arts and technology classes.
This is an impressive range of options that can appeal to someone of any any, depending on their location and interests. It can also help to facilitate a social circle around certain hobby activities.
Sacramento Community Calendar
As I write this, there’s an upcoming food truck festival, farmers market, a handful of civic meetings, and an autumnal parade!
The community calendar is another way to find things to do in the area. Best part? It’s often free to attend events!
Sure, food from the food trucks won’t be free, and you may end up with a t-shirt at the parade. But when so many events are ticketed and expensive upfront these days, it can be nice to attend something where there’s less of an initial barrier to entry to enjoying your day.
Pet Owner Resources
If you’re a pet owner, you undoubtedly love your pet, but you also know that pet ownership can be a lot of work!
Various city resources exist to help lighten this burden. The city has numerous dog parks, animal care service centers, information on adoption if you’re looking to adopt or unable to keep a pet, and there are resources and information on low-cost vaccinations, pet licensing, low-cost veterinary clinics, and tips on training pets.
This is a lot more than many Sacramento residents know they have easy access to, and it can help a lot of people as they care for their beloved pets.
Community Crime Map and Crime Statistics
Crime information that isn’t sensitive to a case must have a certain level of legally-mandated transparency. Part of this is public data on crime statistics.
There’s even a city-wide crime map showing recent incidents and their broad nature.
It’s not fun talking about local crime, but ignoring it isn’t the solution either. Being aware and informed is one of the steps that can lead to prevention.
Accessibility Resources
An increasing number of resources are available to help make more community resources accessible to all. This includes those with age-based accessibility issues, physical handicaps, or cultural and language barriers that may prevent full access to citizen resources.
Information on locations, clubs and events designed for accessibility exists through the city website, as is information on disabled person parking.
And Sacramento’s 3-1-1 customer service center offers translation services that can be of assistance in a wide variety of tasks related to legal or community items. This service claims to offer over 150 different languages!
Senior Citizen Recreation
Several age-friendly communities and areas exist in Sacramento, offering a wide range of recreation and support services. Age-friendly is an official term for these communities that necessitates various accommodations to meet age-friendly criteria.
While most community events know no restrictions on age or participation, it can be useful to learn about services that serve your unique needs.
Sacramento Community Pools
Who doesn’t love a fun day at the pool? And a water park could cost you $50 or more per ticket, and offers less flexibility for when you go to experience all it has to offer.
Community pools are safe gathering spaces that can be great for gatherings of various types, including families and meetups. They offer affordable fun in a controlled environment.
Sacramento boasts 17 different community pools. While most have an entry fee, this is usually quite small. Some also offer classes or exercise options.
Hike & Bike Trails
Several trails exist in the metro area, and others are under active construction that will provide greater access to hikers and/or bikers to the various areas of the city.
Some of the larger projects that are underway include one along the Sacramento River, Del Rio Trail and Two Rivers Trail.
FairyTale Town
FairyTale Town is a large attraction in William Land Park that features animals, gardens, stages with numerous shows throughout the day, and other seasonal or special events.
You can book large events at FairyTale Town as well, which can be ideal for children’s birthday parties or similar events.
The cost is currently $8 for general admission, making it comparatively affordable next to many activity options in the area.
Having opened in 1959, FairyTale Town also stands as one of Sacramento’s oldest attractions!
SMUD – Sacramento Municipal Utility District
Ok, we cheated a bit with this one. SMUD is community-owned, but that doesn’t exactly make it a hotspot for community activities.
However, SMUD can be a great resource for homeowners who are looking to upgrade their home without going over-budget.
They offer rebates and tax credits for a host of home upgrades, including EV Chargers, insulation, solar panels, and HVAC.
These rebates are invariably tied to green initiatives designed to make your home more energy-efficient. They can save you thousands in home upgrades, and our customers frequently see this level of savings on HVAC equipment alone!
As a community resource, SMUD should not be overlooked; it exists to assist the community in becoming more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

CABS Heating and Air Conditioning: Locally Owned Sacramento HVAC Services
Everything above is just scratching the surface. We highlighted a lot of our favorite resources, attractions and opportunities in the Sacramento area, but more exist than we could easily cover in this article.
More than anything, though, we hope this gives you a sense of the types of resources available to you as a Sacramento resident, and gives you some websites and tools to research further on your own.
Yes, we do HVAC, electrical and plumbing services, but we can’t do everything here at CABS, and want to help our community grow together alongside our business. See you out there, Sacramento!
